Meru

Posted on August 26, 2010

Jambo! We are on Meru (Kili’s little sister) at high camp at 3,500 m, just had a huge lunch and I am taking a quick 1/2 hour lie down before we climb “Little Meru” this afternon for some aclimatisation. This morning we set off at 8.30 – me, Nelson & Aristide. Nelson is my Kili guide from last year & he is joining us for both Kili climbs, which is really great! Aristide is our cook & also will be head cook for both Kili teams . . . & yes his food is incredibly good and lots of it!  It was raining & murky as we climbed through the mountain forest until after 2 hours we reached 3,000 m & we popped out above the clouds!  We only climbed for 4 hours today & gained 1,000 m. Tomorrow we are leaving camp at 02:00 to try and reach the summit for 06:00 and hopefully a beautiful African sunrise. The weather is a bit mixed – & looks very windy up high – there is a nasty looking lenticular cloud over the summit! But we’ll have to wait and see! Right – I’m off up Little Meru, I’ll let you know how I get on!  Jon
